Preparing for Special Education Mediation

Thank you for taking a few moments to prepare for your upcoming mediation.

Understand the basics about mediation

There are some essentials to remember about mediation.

  • Everyone at the table is committed to the best interests of the student.
  • Be ready to think creatively with an open mind. Mediation is primarily about finding surprising solutions to problems.
  • Fixing blame on others hurts the process.
  • The mediator won’t solve the problem for you. He or she facilitates a conversation around the issue at hand.
  • Only make agreements that you plan on keeping.

Summarize your perspective

The conversation will be more productive if you’ve taken the time to summarize your issues, concerns and goals. Please use the following questions to guide your preparation.

  • Define the problem as you see it. What is your understanding of the issues? What do you agree with? What do you disagree with? What would you like to be different?
  • Describe what you want to accomplish through mediation.
  • Describe the needs of those who will be affected by the agreement and how you propose to meet them.

What to expect at your session

Come prepared for a full day. A typical mediation session lasts 6-9 hours—even longer if an agreement is close.

Please bring your lunch with you. We often do not have time to stop for a lunch break.
